The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization

I recently re-read this business/management classic, and it is well worth the read. Unlike most of the books on my recommended reading list, this one is quite long. However, the author himself suggests that the various parts to the book (there are five, as you might imagine) can really be read independently, and in any order. Senge lays out five "disciplines" for achieving organizational success, which are personal mastery, mental models, building shared vision, team learning, and systems thinking. The fifth, Systems Thinking, is the key according to Senge, but if you look at all five carefully, you will see the underpinnings of many of the successful business books out there today. Even some of the books on my list, like Katzenbach and Smith's book on teams and Lencioni's books on leadership clearly draw from Senge's work. Pick a section and see how it can apply to your organization.
