Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584 to 2069

by William Strauss and Neill Howe
William Morrow and Company, 1991

This is the ONLY book on generations that I have found that makes a sound, research- and theory-based case for the existence of generational differences. I intuitively believe in their existence based on coverage in the media, but it's nice to know someone out there has put some hard thinking and work into it. I particularly like the fact that they have a clear justification for the starting and ending point of the generations (most others are very vague about this).

Their coverage of generational differences between Boomers and Generation X (which they call the "Thirteenth" generation since the term "Generation X had not yet been popularized in 1991) seems to mesh well with others who write about this, but they don't limit themselves to the generations in the workplace today. Their research identifies generations back to the first European settlements in this country.

They have also identified a very interesting, cyclical pattern, where based on major social "moments," generations become either "dominant" or "recessive." It provides a richness to the generational discussion that I don't usually find in other sources.

I highly recommend this book if this topic is relevant to you (and it is!).
